Just off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island looks the same as it did 200 years ago. Yet, it offers all the activities of a modern beach resort. The list of recreational activities available on the island is long; tours of the island's interior, tours of Avalon, day-time tours of Avalon's historic Art Deco Casino building and movies shown at night in its elaborate theatre; semi-submersible glass-bottom boat trips, flying fish trips, jeep eco-tours, "hummer" tours at the Isthmus; swimming, fishing, bicycling, hiking, camping, horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, guided kayaking expeditions (including evening trips), kayak rentals, parasailing and ocean rafting. You can rent paddle boats, skiffs and golf carts or everything you need for your day at the beach from umbrellas to boogie boards. You can charter a fishing boat or a sail boat, or a boat to take you wake boarding and tube riding. Shopping on the island is an enjoyable experience. Most shops on the island are family owned and shop owners are eager to help visitors find exactly what they are looking for. Catalina's inherent atmosphere combined with Island-style shopping makes for a relaxed adventure, more treasure hunt than bland chore.
